Walk through the sunscreen aisle of any American pharmacy and you will find dozens of products, each with its SPF number prominently displayed. Walk through the clothing section of the same store and you will find almost no equivalent information, despite the fact that the shirt on your back may be offering meaningful UV protection—or, depending on what it is made of, very little at all.

Ultraviolet Protection Factor, or UPF, is the textile industry's counterpart to SPF. It measures how effectively a fabric blocks UV radiation from reaching the skin. And while SPF has become a routine part of how Americans discuss sun safety, UPF remains largely unfamiliar to the general public—even among people who are otherwise diligent about sun protection.

That knowledge gap has real consequences. Clothing is, in many practical respects, a more dependable form of UV protection than sunscreen. It does not wash off in the pool, does not require timed reapplication, and does not depend on correct application technique. Understanding UPF—and knowing how to use it—can meaningfully strengthen any sun safety strategy.

What UPF Actually Measures

The UPF rating system was developed to give consumers a standardized way to evaluate the UV-blocking capacity of fabrics. A fabric rated UPF 50, for example, allows only 1/50th of the UV radiation that strikes it to pass through to the skin. That translates to approximately 98 percent blockage of both UVA and UVB radiation.

This is a critical distinction from SPF, which measures only UVB protection (the rays primarily responsible for sunburn). UPF ratings account for the full UV spectrum, including UVA radiation—the longer-wavelength rays most associated with photoaging and deeper skin damage. In this sense, UPF is a more comprehensive metric than SPF.

The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC) both maintain standards for UPF testing. Garments that achieve a UPF of 15 to 24 are classified as offering good protection; 25 to 39 is very good; and 40 to 50+ is considered excellent. The 50+ designation indicates that fewer than 2 percent of UV radiation penetrates the fabric—comparable to a high-SPF sunscreen applied correctly and in adequate quantity.

Why Your Everyday Clothes May Not Be Enough

A common misconception is that any clothing provides substantial UV protection. In reality, the protective value of a garment varies enormously depending on its construction, fiber content, color, and condition.

A standard white cotton T-shirt—the default choice for millions of Americans on a sunny day—typically offers a UPF of only 5 to 10 when dry. When wet, that rating can drop further, as water reduces the light-scattering properties of the fabric. That level of protection is meaningful compared to bare skin, but it falls well short of what most people assume they are receiving when they put on a shirt.

Several fabric characteristics determine UV protection:

Weave density and construction. Tightly woven fabrics block more UV radiation than loosely woven ones. Hold a fabric up to a light source: if light passes through easily, UV radiation will too. Denim, canvas, and tightly woven synthetics generally outperform lightweight linens and open-knit materials.

Fiber type. Polyester and nylon tend to have higher inherent UV-blocking capacity than cotton or rayon. Wool and silk fall somewhere in between. Some synthetic fibers are specifically engineered with UV-absorbing compounds during manufacturing.

Color. Darker and more saturated colors absorb UV radiation more effectively than lighter ones. A deep navy or black garment will typically provide more protection than a pale yellow or white equivalent made from the same fabric—though this advantage can be offset by differences in weave density.

Moisture content. As noted, wet fabric generally offers less protection than dry fabric. For swimmers, water sports participants, or anyone who perspires heavily, this is a significant consideration.

Condition and age. Worn, stretched, or faded garments lose some of their protective capacity. This is worth keeping in mind for older clothing that sees heavy outdoor use.

The UPF Apparel Market and What to Look For

A growing category of performance and outdoor apparel is now specifically engineered and tested for UV protection. Brands such as Coolibar, Columbia Sportswear, REI, and Solumbra market garments with certified UPF ratings, and major athletic apparel companies have expanded their sun-protective lines in recent years. These products are increasingly available at outdoor retailers, sporting goods stores, and online, though they remain less prominent in mainstream fashion retail.

When evaluating UPF apparel, several features warrant attention:

Integrating Clothing Into a Broader Sun Safety Strategy

UPF clothing should be understood as one component of a layered approach to UV protection, not a complete replacement for other measures. The face, hands, and any skin left uncovered still require sunscreen. And even well-designed sun-protective garments do not eliminate the need for attention to UV Index conditions and time-of-day exposure.

That said, clothing has a practical reliability advantage over topical sunscreen that is worth appreciating. Studies examining real-world sunscreen use consistently find that most people apply far less than the tested amount and skip reapplication. Clothing, by contrast, performs consistently as long as it is worn. For children, older adults, people with photosensitive skin conditions, and anyone engaged in extended outdoor activity, this consistency is a significant asset.

A useful reframe: rather than thinking of sunscreen as the primary protection and clothing as supplemental, consider reversing that hierarchy. Cover what you can cover with well-constructed, appropriately rated fabric. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen to what remains exposed. This approach reduces the burden on sunscreen to perform perfectly and provides a more dependable baseline of protection.

A Final Note on Everyday Wardrobe Choices

You do not need to overhaul your wardrobe to benefit from better textile-based UV protection. Simply being more deliberate about fabric choice, weave density, and coverage when dressing for outdoor activities can make a measurable difference. A tightly woven, dark-colored long-sleeve shirt and a wide-brimmed hat—both items most Americans already own in some form—offer substantially more protection than a light cotton T-shirt and no hat.

The science of UPF is not complicated, but it is unfamiliar to most consumers. Bringing it into routine sun safety decision-making is one of the more straightforward improvements available—and one that requires no trip to the pharmacy.
